Iron Bowl

There really is nothing like the Iron Bowl. Fans of other teams will argue that their rivalries are on par with Alabama-Auburn, but few, if any, can make a legitimate case.

On paper, there are plenty of reasons this rivalry rises above the rest – among them, no professional teams in the state, the sanctified passion and the impact on relationships and conversations year-round – but to really grasp the magnitude of this game, look no further than this week’s matchup.

The No. 1 team in the country is rolling into the Plains to face a team that is playing its best football of the season, led by a formidable running game and strong defense. It really could be the synopsis for many Iron Bowls.

There is tension and excitement reaching from the Tennessee Valley to the Gulf Coast, and the entire state is ready to turn its attention to what promises to be an epic battle once again. In the process, they’ll remind the rest of the country why there’s nothing like college football in the south.

As a precursor to Saturday’s matchup, though, let’s look at the top 10 games in Iron Bowl history.

The series began in 1893 in Birmingham, and this season’s contest will be the 82nd. The Crimson Tide leads the series 45-35-1. We’re going to highlight 10 of the most memorable; to be fair, they’ll be split evenly between Alabama and Auburn wins.

The games are listed chronologically because they all elicit the same grin or scowl, depending on your team, across the faces of fans every time they’re mentioned.
