A look at the 15 best games on the opening weekend of the 2018 season

Fear not, college football fans: We come closer to the grand opening of the 2018 season every day.

The season begins in earnest on Thursday, August 30, with – as of now – five games scheduled (potentially, a few more could be moved for TV). There are three games ln August 31, then – bam – it’s the first Saturday of the season.

While the first weekend of the 2018 season doesn’t quite match up to the greatness that was the first weekend of the 2017 season, there are quite a few marquee matchups – including what might be the best non-conference game of the entire season.

Here are the 15 best games of the opening weekend of the 2018 season – and, remember, we’re just 231 days away!

15. San Diego State at Stanford

The skinny: San Diego State beat Stanford this season. The Aztecs featured the nation’s leading rusher in Rashaad Penny, but he was a senior and is gone. Stanford featured the nation’s No. 2 rusher in Bryce Love, but he is expected to leave early for the NFL. Stanford coach David Shaw has to hope his 2018 defense is a lot better than the 2017 version.
