ORLANDO — Only four of the nation’s top 10 receivers signed during the early signing period, and one who did not is four-star prospect Justyn Ross, who is the top-ranked recruit in the state of Alabama.

“I did consider signing early, but I just felt like I needed a little more time,” Ross told GN during his preparation for the Under Armour All-American Game.

Ross said he was “surprised by a lot of the signings” and that the early signing period adds further pressure to the process.

“It’s good for the coaches because they can go ahead and lock in their recruits,” he said. “But I think for the prospects, they are feeling pressure to sign by coaches.”

Ross (6 feet 4, 201 pounds), from Phenix City (Ala.) Central, is a national top-60 overall prospect. He appears to be down to Alabama, Clemson and Auburn, whose campus is about 30 miles from Auburn’s; one other school could be in the mix, as well.

He said family connections will be important come National Signing Day.

“Just the relationship that they build with my family,” Ross said. “I have a good relationship with all these schools, so now it’s really on my family to find a place where they can really feel like they can call it home.

“I’ve set dates to visit Alabama on January 19, and Auburn on January 26. I could take one more visit, but I’m not sure yet.”

Ross visited Clemson on the weekend of November 18.

Could Florida be making a late charge?

“Yeah, me and Emory (Jones), we are cool,” Ross said. “I met him last year at the ‘Future 50’ (camp). He’s a great quarterback, and Florida is getting a real good dude.”

Has Ross heard from the new Gators staff?

“I’ve been talking to Coach (Billy) Gonzales (wide receivers coach) a little bit,” he said. “He’s telling me that he can develop me as a receiver and that he has the quarterback to help me develop.”

He also likes his interactions with Dan Mullen.

“He’s a real cool dude,” Ross said. “I’ve talked to him on the phone a couple times and I feel like we can build a relationship.”

Expect Ross to announce his intentions on National Signing Day.
