Ole Miss won’t play a bowl game this year, but one Rebels player is in contention to be recognized as the best at his position in college football.
Wide receiver A.J. Brown was selected Monday morning as one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award, presented each season to the best receiver in college football, regardless of position.
Brown is the only SEC player among the 10 nominees.
The list also includes three players from the Big 12, two each from the American Athletic and Pac-12 and one each from the ACC and Mountain West.
From a statistical standpoint, Brown has easily compiled the most impressive numbers in the SEC this season. So far, he has 62 receptions, 1,015 yards and nine touchdowns, leading the conference outright in the first two categories and tying for the lead in touchdowns.
The sophomore has achieved those totals despite the loss of starting quarterback Shea Patterson for the season due to an October knee injury.
No Ole Miss receiver has ever won the Biletnikoff Award. The only previous SEC receivers to win the award are LSU’s Josh Reed in 2001 and Alabama’s Amari Cooper in 2014.
