The school confirmed Tuesday that Chavis will take over the defense under new coach Chad Morris.

Chavis, 61, comes to Fayetteville from Texas A&M, where he had served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the past three years under Kevin Sumlin.
Noted around college football for his aggressive defensive schemes, Chavis directed an Aggies pass rush that tied for second place nationally with 3.31 sacks per game this season, even after the loss of overall No. 1 draft pick Myles Garrett to the NFL.
Chavis is a familiar face to SEC fans, coaching at Tennessee under Johnny Majors and Phillip Fulmer from 1989-2008 (the last 14 as defensive coordinator) and at LSU under Les Miles from 2009-14. He was the defensive coordinator on the Vols’ national championship team in 1998.
