Auburn has added a matchup against UMass to its schedule for 2020 – and it will come at a hefty price. The Tigers will will pay the Minutemen $1.9 million.
The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that the payout is believed to tied the NCAA record for the largest contract for a guarantee game. The Georgia-Kent State matchup in 2022 also includes a $1.9 million payment, by Georgia.
UMass’ previous high for a guarantee game was $1.5 million, which it received for playing South Carolina in 2016. UMass also will get $1.5 million for its 2018 matchup against Georgia.
Auburn now has three non-conference games scheduled for 2020. It is scheduled to play host to Southern Miss on September 26, to UMass on November 14 and to Alabama A&M on November 21. That means that for its annual Iron Bowl showdown against Alabama, the Tigers will be coming in off presumably easy games against UMass and Alabama A&M.
