19. Florida, 1994
The Fun ‘n’ Gun air game reigned during the Steve Spurrier era at Florida, but the Gators weren’t bad on the ground, either. The 1994 duo might have been the Head Ball Coach’s best.
In freshmen Fred Taylor and Elijah Williams, the Gators had the makings of a ground attack that helped them win three consecutive SEC championships.
Taylor posted the top numbers in 1994, gaining 873 yards with eight touchdowns. Not far behind was Williams, with 652 yards and four scores. In an offense that got most of its production from quarterback Danny Wuerffel and the high-flying air game, the Gators’ rushing duo helped make defensive coordinators’ lives nearly impossible.
Both Taylor and Williams played all four years for the Gators. Both played in the NFL as well, although Williams ended up shifting to cornerback. Taylor, on the other hand, enjoyed a long and successful career as a running back, mostly with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
