For the first time in the College Football Playoff era, sports bettors will be able to get odds on every Power Five team plus a number of others to simply qualify for the four team playoff. In previous years, sports books have offered ‘yes’ or ‘no’ odds on teams like Alabama, Ohio State, and Oklahoma to make the College Football Playoff, but on Monday, the Westgate Superbook released odds for 78 teams to make the “final four”.
Defending champion Alabama leads the way, and are the only team listed as a money line favorite, with odds of -220. (risk $220 to profit $100). -220 odds convert to an implied probability of 68.75%. The Tide atop any list should come as no surprise to anyone. Since taking over as head coach in 2007, Alabama has been a top three preseason National Championship team odds-wise in all, but two of Saban’s seasons.
The Georgia Bulldogs have the second-best odds in the SEC, and fourth best nationally behind Ohio State and Clemson, to make this year’s Playoff. Kirby Smart and Company are priced at +150 (1.5 to 1) and have a 40% chance of making it back to the Playoff. While the Bulldogs have slightly lower odds of making the Playoff, their 42.9% chance of winning the SEC is higher than the Tide’s 35.7%.
Auburn and Gus Malzahn have the next best odds of making the 2019 Playoff. The Westgate opened the Tigers up with odds of 4 to 1 (+400) and a one in five chance of making their third national championship appearance since 2010.
LSU at 12 to 1 (+1200, 7.69%), Texas A&M at 15 to 1 (+1500, 6.25%), and Mississippi State at 15 to 1 (+1500, 6.25%) round out the top six.
The rest of the SEC’s odds:
Florida 20 to 1 (+2000, 4.76%)
Missouri Tigers 40 to 1 (+4000, 2.44%)
South Carolina Gamecocks 40 to 1 (+4000, 2.44%)
Kentucky Wildcats 100 to 1 (+10000, 0.99%)
Vanderbilt Commodores 200 to 1 (+20000, 0.5%)
Tennessee Volunteers 200 to 1 (+20000, 0.5%)
Mississippi Rebels 200 to 1 (+20000, 0.5%)
Arkansas Razorbacks 200 to 1 (+20000, 0.5%)
We’ll dive deeper into teams and value as we get into summer practice and inch closer to the start of the 2018 college football season. We’re less than 200 days until the college football playoff. What a time to be alive.
