Yes, it is early. Really, really early. But mock draft season is now upon the football world, and it’s looking very promising for future NFL talent from Alabama.
Two Alabama players are listed in the top eight of the first mock draft released Monday by Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports, a draft that includes four Crimson Tide players in the first round overall.
Trapasso expects Alabama cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick to go to the Indianapolis Colts with the third pick overall, while Tide receiver Calvin Ridley is projected to join the Chicago Bears with the eighth pick.
Two more Alabama players, safety Ronnie Harrison and linebacker Rashaan Evans, are listed as the final two picks in the first round.
Compared to last year, the proportion of the first-round talent from the SEC in Trapasso’s mock draft is somewhat down. Aside from the four Alabama players, he lists only Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith (10th pick to the Oakland Raiders), LSU running back Derrius Guice (16th pick to the Baltimore Ravens) and Florida defensive tackle Taven Bryan (26th pick to the Atlanta Falcons) as first-rounders. Unlike some analysts, Trapasso does not project players like Texas A&M wide receiver Christian Kirk or Alabama defensive tackle Da’Ron Payne as first-round picks.
The SEC’s seven first-rounders in the mock draft still ties for first with the Big 12, which has a resurgence of top-tier prospects after getting only quarterback Patrick Mahomes into the top 45 of the 2017 draft.
The Big Ten and Pac-12 are shown with four first-rounders each, along with three from the ACC, two each from the American Athletic, Conference USA and independents, and one from the Mountain West.
The mock draft includes five first-round quarterbacks, starting with USC’s Sam Darnold and UCLA’s Josh Rosen with the first two picks. After that, Oklahoma’s Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield is forecast to go sixth to the New York Jets, Wyoming’s Josh Allen is projected 15th to the Arizona Cardinals and Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph is predicted to join the Buffalo Bills with the 21st pick.
