This week’s College Football Playoff, bowl projections

bowl season begins saturday
MATTHEW EMMONS/USA TODAY SPORTS

Here are the updated GN playoff and bowl projections.

Our four projected playoff teams this week: Alabama, Clemson, Miami and Oklahoma.

The thoughts on those four: Alabama wins out, including the SEC championship game; Clemson downs Miami in a close one in the ACC title game; Oklahoma wins the Big 12 championship game; and Wisconsin loses to Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game. In that scenario, there are two ACC teams in the playoff. If Wisconsin wins, the ACC title-game loser is out.

If there indeed are two ACC teams in the playoff, the Orange Bowl still is contractually obligated to have the highest-ranked ACC team that is not in the playoff in its game. In addition, if the Orange Bowl has a Big Ten team as the opponent, the Citrus Bowl is contractually obligated to take an ACC team to face an SEC team rather than a Big Ten team.
