In high school, Dorian Gerald was underrated and underrecruited. Now, Gerald is in junior college in California and has become a hot commodity.
Since the beginning of April, Gerald has been offered by Alabama, Florida, LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee — and those are just his SEC offers.
“I give all the credit to God,” Gerald told GN regarding all his recent offers. “I prayed about it and it happened. I felt like it was going to happen eventually; I just didn’t know when. I started praying and everything just started working out for me.
“It’s exciting, but at the same time I have to stay focused. My parents and my coaches, they tell me to try and not look at the logo of these schools. They want me to look at the coach and the relationship I have with the coach.”

Gerald (6 feet 3, 255 pounds) starred at Florence (S.C.) West Florence and even played in the state’s North-South All-Star Game. But he didn’t get many offers and instead chose to attend College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Calif., a suburb north of Los Angeles. He had a huge freshman season, with 12 sacks and 24 tackles for loss.
He said he soon will begin the process of narrowing down his college options.
“I have a couple schools that I’m looking at, but I will be announcing my top schools on June 1,” Gerald said.
Gerald does have certain criteria he is looking for when making a college choice.
“I’m looking for … the opportunity to play,” he said. “I want to be around great talent and have the chance to compete. I want to go somewhere where there is a need for a pass rusher. I also want to go somewhere where I have a great relationship with people. Relationships and honesty are big with me. Distance from home won’t be a big factor.
“At the end of the day, Alabama is one of the best offers I have, but is that the right fit for me? I have to look at each school’s defensive schemes and how will I line up there. So, I don’t look at the logo on the helmet. I have to go where it is best for me.”
How does Gerald describe his game?
“I would describe myself as explosive,” he said. “I feel like I’m real fast off the edge.”
Along with the SEC offers, Gerald also has offers from, among others, Florida State, Louisville, Oklahoma and Texas Tech.
“I’m going to announce my top schools on June 1, but if I then go on a visit June 2 and I fall in love with it, I could commit June 2,” Gerald said. “There is no real set date for me to commit. It’s really up in the air.”
