Expect Tennessee freshman RB Ty Chandler to fill hole left by Jalen Hurd, Alvin Kamara

Tennessee will face a big void replacing both Alvin Kamara and Jalen Hurd – who left the team last October – in 2017.

Many expected rising junior John Kelly to make the most of Hurd’s departure and Kamara’s knee injury last season. But there’s another running back who could compete for playing time next season.

Four-star incoming freshman Ty Chandler is expected to make an impact as well. Former college and NFL scout Chris Landry believes Chandler’s skill set will provide the Volunteers with the perfect replacement.

“Tennessee freshman RB Ty Chandler can work inside and outside for the Vols and his speed can complement what’s already on the roster,” Landry writes. “Chandler is a freshman to watch for potential early import in 2017, as both Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara are no longer in the picture, leaving a vacuum to fill. He was a TOP 100 level prospect in the 2017 class. He possesses a lovely blend of balance and explosivity.”

Chandler ranked as the No. 5 running back, No. 5 player from the state of Tennessee and the No. 68 overall prospect for the 2017 national recruiting class. He also participated in the 2017 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January.

The former Nashville Montgomery Bell Academy standout rushed for 2,252 yards and 39 touchdowns on 259 attempts last fall as a senior.
