Former Gator receiver O.J. Small likes changes Dan Mullen is making

Former Florida Gator wide receiver O.J. Small was a guest on 1010XL Radio in Jacksonville Tuesday. Small played at Florida from 2001-2004, hauling in 117 career receptions for over 1350 yards and scoring seven touchdowns.

“The bar is high and that is a prestigious job and everybody knows that brought him in to improve the offense and get the best out of the offense,” Small told 1010XL regarding the hiring of Dan Mullen. “Hopefully he comes in with the right game plan and he definitely has talent to work with, it’s just about putting it all together.

“I was down there a couple weeks ago and I had a chance to talk with him a little bit. I’m looking forward to it and I think he is going to be able to bring the best out of the kids, they are going to get after it and we will see how the season goes.”

How hard has it been for a former Gator like Small to see his alma mater struggle recently?

“It has definitely been frustrating, but at the same time it some of the decision making in the offseason, off the field that has hurt them, it definitely hurt them last year,” Small said. “They have had some injuries as well.

“It’s hard to go to battle without a full clip in your rounds. So, they need to be sure that they are doing what it takes to be successful and play as a team and stop making bad decisions.

Small thinks one particular change that has been made could especially help the Gators moving forward.

“I understand they brought in a new strength coach, which is good because we were too small last year,” Small said. “I know we are the Florida Gators and all, but we we’re not the biggest team in the SEC. We need to get that weight room right because that weight program is going to dictate a lot of what happens on the field.

“They just need to put it together because there has never been a problem getting athletes to the University of Florida. It’s just putting it all together and having all the kids with the right mindset. Hopefully they put that together because that is what Mullen was hired to do.”
