The Crimson Tide currently have the No.1 class in the 2019 recruiting cycle. Alabama has added a handful of commitments to that class in the past few weeks, including a pledge from four-star wide receiver John Metchie.
“I made the decision based on the home feel when I was on campus,” Metchie told GN. “I just got the feeling that this is home. Alabama has been a dream school of mine and I have built a strong relationship with the coaches. I just knew it was the place for me.”
Metchie is looking forward to the challenge that he knows Alabama will offer.
“It’s exciting, especially as a person who loves to compete, you know you’re coming into an environment where there is nothing but competition,” he said. “You’re in competition with the best and practicing with the best, so not only are you getting better, but so is the team. Their winning is clearly a product of their competitiveness.”
Metchie, (6-foot, 195 pounds) originally from Canada, has spent the past few years at St. James School in Hagerstown, MD and will spend this year at The Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ.
Metchie, who is considered to be among the top-300 overall prospects nationally in the 2019 class, says he doesn’t pay much attention to recruiting rankings.
“I don’t really think about that because I’m not one of those that’s really big into the rankings,” Metchie said. “I’m just here to play and chase my dream.”
Metchie, who chose Alabama over offers from Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas and others, says there are two things that define his game.
“I think versatility and explosiveness are my two biggest strengths,” Metchie said. “I think versatility is a big one because I can move around and stretch the field. I think explosiveness as well because I can male explosive plays, whether that is catching a screen and taking it long, or being a deep threat.”
When asked if he was shutting his recruitment down after his commitment, Metchie left little doubt.
“I’m pretty sure that I’m shutting my recruitment down,” Metchie said. “I know Alabama is the place for me and that is where I’ll be going.”
Metchie had this message for the Alabama fan base.
“This 2019 Alabama class is going to be scary, Roll Tide.”
Metchie joins four-star defensive end Byron Young (Laurel, MS) and four-star tight end Jahleel Billingsley (Chicago, IL) as commitments for the Crimson Tide since July 4.
Alabama currently has 20 commitments for its 2019 recruiting class. Of those 20 commitments, 19 are considered to be four or five-star prospects by 247sports.com.
