Jacksonville-area 2019 RB Devin Ellison drawing SEC, ACC interest

Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns (Fla.) is known for its high-powered offense, spearheaded by a duo of FBS-bound quarterbacks, Joey Gatewood and Riley Smith. Overshadowed junior running back Devin Ellison is another key component of the Bears’ offense who demands attention of his own with 1,055 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on the season.

Ellison (5-feet-9, 182 pounds) is a three-star prospect rated inside the Top 50 running backs for the 2019 class according to 24/7 Sports.

“I never played football to get offers or go to college, I just played it because I loved it, and to be recognized like that, that was very touching,” Ellison told GN. “Glory to God that I got recognized like that.”

The junior has already received 13 offers from FBS schools. Out of all the teams interested in him at this point, two stand out.

“Wake (Forest),” Ellison said. “Wake is a nice school. And Kentucky, because I used to live in Lexington.”
Growing up in Lexington, you would assume Ellison grew up a Wildcat fan, another reason why they might be high on his list.

“No, I’ve never really been a Kentucky fan” Ellison said. “I’ve been a Louisville fan and a Florida Gator fan, but since I’m familiar with the area and I’d have so many close people over there, that would always be a consideration.”

Ellison said he speaks often with both schools. He also mentioned FAU as another school he has had regular contact with.

In the end, Ellison will base his college decision on these aspects.

“Education first,” Ellison said. “I want to play for a good school and a strong football team with a good spirit, you know, a good atmosphere.”

With still his senior season still to go, Ellison has a bright future ahead of him. He said that he will continue to work over the off-season to improve and draw even more attention. Ellison will be one of the highest recruited running backs in the Northeast Florida next season.
