South Carolina football had a few award winners at the athletic program’s annual Gamecock Gala on Monday night.

Quarterback Jake Bentley won the Male New Student-Athlete of the Year and kicker Elliott Fry won the Gamecock Inspiration Award. Bentley, along with wide receiver Deebo Samuel, also won team MVP honors.

Bentley threw for 1,420 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions last season as a true freshman. He started the Gamecocks’ final seven games and went 4-3.

Going into the 2017 season, Bentley enters as South Carolina’s clear-cut starter at quarterback, particularly after Brandon McIlwain announced he was transferring from the school last month.

Samuel, a redshirt sophomore last season, led the Gamecocks with 59 receptions for 783 yards and one touchdown.

Fry went 13 for 17 on field goal attempts with a long of 55, which came in the last minute of South Carolina’s season-opening 13-10 win over Vanderbilt last fall.

Last season, the South Carolina football team only won one award, its team MVP, which was given to now former wide receiver Pharoh Cooper.
