3-star CB Jemaurian Jones a Mississippi State commitment, but says he still is open

Three-star cornerback Jemaurian Jones is the newest member of Mississippi State’s 2018 recruiting class. Jones committed to the Bulldogs on February 28.

“I’m being recruited all across the country, but I felt like Mississippi State was the best opportunity,” Jones told GN. “Until other schools make a better opportunity, I feel like Mississippi State is the best opportunity for me right now.”

Jones (6 feet 1, 170 pounds), from Brookhaven (Miss.) High, committed to Mississippi State over offers from Memphis, Louisville and Purdue. Last week, he received an offer from Ole Miss.

Although committed to Mississippi State, Jones says he remains open.

“Right now, Mississippi State is the best opportunity for me, but I’m giving everyone in the country a fair chance,” he said.

Jones has enjoyed getting to know Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen.

“It’s a great relationship with everyone,” Jones said. “Coach Dan Mullen, he’s really hyped-up about me. He’s the one that really pushed me to commit. He told me I’m a good player and that I can come in right away as a true freshman and contribute. That was really big.”

Cornerbacks have to have confidence on the field, and Jones is not lacking in that department.

“I’m a very physical corner,” Jones said. “I like to get up in you all game. I like to press a lot, and you have to show me you are better than me.”

One of the biggest reasons for the Mississippi State commitment was Bulldogs secondary coach and recruiting coordinator Terrell Buckley.

“Coach Buckley is a great coach and a great guy,” Jones said. “We have a strong bond that we have built over the past three or four months. I made the commitment because Coach Buckley told me exactly what he needed from me.”

After his commitment to the Bulldogs, Jones said the pressure is now off.

“It’s really a weight lifted off my shoulders, knowing what Mississippi State needs out of me,” he said. “There is a big difference between want and need, and the Mississippi State defensive back unit, they need me.”
