Former Alabama and current Atlanta Falcons star Julio Jones is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. Jones, a former All-SEC wide receiver, has made four Pro Bowl appearances – including three consecutive – and led the NFL in receiving yards and receptions in 2015.
Florida coach Jim McElwain is no stranger to Jones’ abilities having coached him as an offensive coordinator during his time at Alabama. So when McElwain compared current Gators wide receiver Antonio Callaway to Jones – as well as former Patriots star Deion Branch, whom he coached at Louisville – his claim has credibility.
“He’s a guy that is fun to watch practice,” McElwain said of Callaway at SEC Media Days. “You know, I’ve been around some really good players, and I don’t want to put him in these categories, but these guys that have been successful, like a guy that I coached at Louisville, Deion Branch, who practiced every day like it was a game, (and) Julio Jones when he was at Alabama … I’m talking about as soon as you walked through the gate, man, it was on. Antonio is one of those guys. He just loves to play the game.”
Callaway led the Gators with 54 receptions for 721 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore in 2016.
