ORLANDO — Under Armour All-American kicker Evan McPherson signed with Florida during the early signing period because of Dan Mullen.
McPherson, from Fort Payne (Ala.) High, committed to Mississippi State in April 2016 when Mullen was Bulldogs coach. He admits he was frustrated when Mullen left to become coach at Florida.
“Yeah, the first 24 hours, we were kind of upset about it,” McPherson told GN during preparations for the Under Armour All-American Game. “We really didn’t know what to do, and I was stuck with Mississippi State then. But that Sunday he called me and I started thinking and thinking, and then when he came for the home visit, that just really set it off.
“That made me feel really good just to know that he really cares about me and that he really wants me to play for his team.”
McPherson, who is the No. 1 kicker in the country for the class of 2018, said it was tough to make the phone call to MSU coaches to tell them he instead was going to Florida.
“It was really hard because I had built a really strong connection there,” he said. “Calling them, it was hard but they understood. They said I have to go wherever I need to go, so they understood.”
With Eddy Pineiro leaving after his junior season, McPherson will be expected to win the kicking job immediately. Is there any added pressure?
“It’s motivation, definitely,” McPherson said. “If I come in and just miss, then everybody is going to dog me and stuff. I need to come in and do just as good or even better than him.”
