Georgia cornerback Malkom Parrish had surgery to repair a “small broken bone” in his foot this week, coach Kirby Smart confirmed Saturday.

Smart says Parrish will still miss “two to four weeks” and has not been ruled out for the Bulldogs’ season opener against Appalachian State on Sept. 2.

Parrish, a senior, sustained the injury during practice Tuesday. In his absence, Aaron Davis has moved to his cornerback spot opposite junior Deandre Baker.

“It’s not doomsday,” Smart said. “We could sit around to cry and whine about it. But it’s not a position that we’re real deep at right now. That’s not a great situation, but that’s the way football is.

“We’re very fortunate to have a guy that’s played a lot of football here in Aaron Davis. A guy in Tyrique McGhee that worked really hard at that position last year. We’ve kind of been working Tyrique there all along. Everybody’s been talking about Tyrique at Star, we’ve been working Tyrique at corner because we felt like he was the next corner should we get somebody injured. So Tyrique, Aaron Davis, Ameer Speed, William Poole and Eric Stokes will all be battling it out.”

McGhee played in all 13 games of the 2016 season as a freshman. He mostly played on special teams and finished nine tackles.

Davis has played cornerback for the Bulldogs in the past. He started for Georgia in 2014 when Jeremy Pruitt was the defensive coordinator.

With his move back to corner, he has given true freshman Richard LeCounte the chance to work as a first-team safety, playing alongside senior Dominick Sanders. Redshirt sophomore J.R. Reed worked as the first-team Star.

Smart said earlier this month that he had some concerns about the depth in the secondary, most of which is younger inexperienced players behind the veteran starters.

During Saturday’s practice, Parrish was spotted by reporters standing off to the side with a cast on his left foot.
