Ever since head coach Dan Mullen arrived at the University of Florida back in December, the biggest question hovering over Gator Nation was: who will start at quarterback this fall.

Most will tell you that redshirt-sophomore Feleipe Franks has the inside track to the starting job because of his experience from last season. Others will say the quarterback Mullen and staff sought out upon arriving in Gainesville, true-freshman Emory Jones, has every opportunity because of his status as an early-enrollee and his greater mobility than Franks.

Not many would have put forward a name outside of those two candidates, well, at least not until now.

Florida held a scrimmage on Friday and by all indications the star of the “show” at the quarterback position was neither Franks, nor Jones, but redshirt-sophomore Kyle Trask.

Trask, (6 feet 5, 239 pounds) from Manvel, TX, was part of the Gators’ 2016 recruiting class right along with Franks. However, Trask has yet to see any game action in two years on the Florida campus.

According to unofficial media stats by Robbie Andreu of the Gainesville Sun, Trask finished Friday’s scrimmage 12-of-18 for 182 yards and three touchdowns along with one interception.

While Trask had a good performance, the same cannot be said for Franks who finished Friday’s scrimmage just 7-of-22 for 127 yards with two touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions.

While you cannot put too much stock into one scrimmage during spring practice, the fact remains that by all accounts Trask was the best looking quarterback on the field Friday night.

Despite his disappointing scrimmage, Franks still looks to be the Gators No. 1 option at quarterback moving forward, but unlike in weeks past, when the conversation about the Florida quarterback job only revolved around Franks and true-freshman Jones, there is now a third quarterback in the mix and one who Gator fans need to remember is battling right alongside those two: Kyle Trask.
