LSU defensive end Arden Key could be back in action sooner than anticipated for the Tigers – at least according to him.

Key wrote Friday on Twitter that he’s making good process, presumably in his recovery from an offseason shoulder surgery.

“Feel good, doing good, ahead of schedule,” Key wrote.

LSU announced on June 4 that Key recently underwent a shoulder surgery that “went as planned,” Tigers coach Ed Orgeron said in a statement. The school did not offer specifics about a timetable on his return at the time, though Orgeron said two days later that he was unsure if Key would be ready in time for the start of LSU’s fall camp in late July or early August.

Key’s surgery was for his left shoulder.

LSU’s announcement about Key’s surgery came at the same time it announced he was returning from the team after taking a leave of absence for “personal reasons” that began in mid-February. He rejoined the team on June 5, one day after the announcement about his return.

While with the team, Key has not been participating in summer workouts as he rehabs the shoulder.

Key’s shoulder injury appears to possibly stem from the one he suffered in LSU’s home loss to Florida on Nov. 19. While he didn’t miss any time because of the injury, it’s possible he could have had he not been suspended instead for LSU’s regular-season finale against Texas A&M.

Key was second in the SEC with a school-record 12 sacks in 2016. He had five sacks as a true freshman in 2015.

All other returning LSU defenders combined for four sacks last season.

When Key was hinting at a return to LSU in early April, he indicated that he was up from his listed 238 pounds last season to 255. Key, who is 6-foot-6, remains listed at 238 pounds on LSU’s official roster, though it’s possible it hasn’t been updated yet for him following his absence.

Key currently is viewed as an early favorite to be taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft.
