Mississippi State’s biggest needs, top targets on the 2018 recruiting trail

Mississippi State signed a junior college-heavy group of recruits in 2017, with nine of its 24 signees transferring in from junior colleges.

The Bulldogs shouldn’t have to go so JC-heavy in 2018.

Here’s a look at the biggest recruiting priorities for the ’18 class for the Bulldogs.

1. Wide receiver: The Bulldogs only signed one wide receiver in the 2017 class and with Gabe Myles and Donald Gray seniors this fall, this position will be a focal point for 2018. Freshman Jonnas Spivey transferred and other underclassmen haven’t risen to the occasion, making wide receiver depth thin and uncertain.

2. Defensive back: Mississippi State signed five defensive backs in the 2017 class, but three of those are JC transfers who may or may not pan out. There is a need for some young DBs for 2018 and beyond.

3. Quarterback: The Bulldogs have a returning rising star in Nick Fitzgerald and their presumed quarterback of the future in true freshman early enrollee Keytaon Thompson, but not much after that. The Bulldogs must pursue another high-profile quarterback for depth and to solidify quarterback numbers for the future.
