Mississippi State added a commitment to its 2019 class over the weekend when it received a pledge from three-star defensive back Martin Emerson Jr.
“The atmosphere and the coaching staff, really just everything about the place,” Emerson told GN regarding why he committed to Mississippi State. “I just felt like everything was right, for me it just felt right. I think it is a place that I can adapt to easy and I think it is the right move for me.”
Emerson has enjoyed getting to know Mississippi State head coach Joe Moorhead during this recruiting process.
“I like his personality and he makes everything fun,” Emerson said. “When I talk to him, we talk like we are friends. Some coaches are just so serious about everything, but I can joke around with him, have fun and talk smack and all that.”
Emerson, 6-foot-2, 185 pounds from Pensacola, FL Pine Forest High School, had compiled more than 25 offers nationally. He chose Mississippi State over offers from Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, Ole Miss and others.
What type of player is Emerson?
“I’m physical and use my speed to my advantage,” he said. “I try to bait the quarterback as well, but they throw away from me a lot.”
Having the opportunity to play in the SEC means a great deal to Emmerson.
“It has always been a dream of mine to play SEC football growing up in the South,” he said. “I don’t think it has really set in yet and it probably won’t sink in until I hit the field. I know it’s a blessing and I can’t wait.”
Mississippi State currently has 17 commitments for its 2019 class.
“I’m very excited and I know there are going to be big things in the future for us,” Emerson said. “I’m glad to be a part of it.”
Emerson had this message for the Mississippi State fan base.
“Thank you for welcoming me with open arms and I’m going to give you a reason to scream my name on Saturdays.”
Emerson is the second commitment for the Bulldogs in 2019 from Pensacola. Three-star offensive tackle Darius Washington committed State on June 2.
