“Family, friends, and coaches being behind me throughout this whole process,” Preston wrote. “It has been very fun for me getting all of this attention, but after today my mind is focused on winning a State Championship with my St. James Wildcat family. I realize without my teammates this would be all just a dream. I owe it to them to give my all every day moving forward. I would like to say thanks each and every school for showing interest in me and giving me a chance to play for their university, but I can only play for one!!
“The biggest thing for me in this recruiting process was where not only me but also my family were comfortable with. They made it very clear to me that they wanted me with a good education and chance to watch me play ball. My choice checks off all the boxes that were important to us! So I would like to say that I am committing to Mississippi State University. HAIL STATE”
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Preston, from St. James (La.) High, chose the Bulldogs over finalists Texas Tech, Vanderbilt and Louisiana Tech. Other offers he has include Arizona and Purdue, among others.
Preston received an offer from Mississippi State on June 3. He announced Wednesday on Twitter that he would make his decision Friday evening.
For the Bulldogs, Preston’s commitment was their second of the day in their 2018 recruiting class. Three-star prospect Tyrese Ross, another safety, also committed.
Collectively, Mississippi State now has 14 commitments in the class, which 247Sports currently ranks No. 35 in the nation and No. 7 in the SEC.
Preston is ranked by 247Sports Composite as a top-80 safety in the nation and top-50 overall prospect in Louisiana.
Running backs coach Greg Knox serves as Preston’s primary recruiter and safeties coach Ron English is his secondary recruiter.
