Gary Stokan of the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic told SportsRadio WNML in Knoxville he has “full assurance” the Tennessee-Georgia Tech opener for the 2017 season will be played in the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The game is scheduled for Sept. 4.

“I have talked with them (officials) daily over the last week,’’ Stokan said. “We’ll be in good shape. It [UT-GT] is the fourth event in there.’’

The new stadium has undergone construction delays, forcing a July 30 MLS soccer match to be rescheduled. Delays were caused by issues over the retractable roof, which is expected to be closed during the first few games at the new venue.

So far, the new stadium has had three delays, originally being scheduled to open March 1, then pushed back to June 1 and later July 30. The stadium is scheduled to host an August 26 preseason game between the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals, followed by an August 31 exhibition between the Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tennessee (25,000 tickets) and Georgia Tech (30,000) have already sold out their allotment tickets, according to Stokan. He also confirmed that the Alabama-FSU kickoff game is sold out.

“We need more tickets,’’ Stokan said of the 71,000-seat Mercedes-Benz Stadium. “We have two hard sellouts for sure.’’
