Rampaging Rams set their sights on the playoffs

Jared Goff

If you asked any football fan how they thought the Los Angeles Rams were going to start their 2017 campaign, they probably wouldn’t have answered that they would be top of their division a quarter of the way through the season. However, that’s exactly what this team has achieved so far and they have truly been the surprise package in this year’s league. They look nothing like the lethargic side we witnessed in 2016 and have somehow managed to completely transform themselves into a totally different team.

Last season they finished with a dismal 4-12 record which was the fifth worst in the league. However, that is all behind them now and the Rams have won three out of the first four games. This has them sitting on top of the NFC West division with the favorites Seattle sitting back on equal second with the Arizona Cardinals and a 2-2 record.

Fans are loving it, and people are starting to notice that they may be the dark horse for the playoffs this year. The lowest record last year for the wildcard slots was 9-7 and was enough to snatch Detroit a playoff slot against the Seahawks. The Lions went down to Seattle 26-6 in what was a disappointing performance after making it that far.

Seattle are the heavy favorites to win the division this year but some early slip-ups have given Los Angeles a real fighting chance. The Seahawks currently sit on -225 with the Rams next in line at +350. They are still an outside chance but after their recent performances, it may be time to get behind Los Angeles. If some people aren’t sure about how long they can keep up this run of form, they may wish to use a tipping website such as Oddschecker and take advantage of some of the free bets on offer to minimize their risk.

One of the major things that has helped propel them into first is the ease at which they are scoring. Los Angeles have scored 142 points in the first four games which is incredible from a team that was struggling so much last year. Their biggest win would have to be defeating the Cowboys 35-30 in Dallas. All the players stepped up, and it was a real gritty team performance from the side that left the home fans in shock.

Rookie receiver Cooper Kupp had a fantastic game, catching five passes for 60 yards and scoring a touchdown. When speaking after the game he gave credit to quarterback Todd Gurley for creating opportunities with his passing game.

He also praised the work that Coach Sean McVay has done with the offensive line. It has kept other teams guessing and the with the players they have at the moment, they can execute their plays regardless of how the other team’s defense sets up.

The crowd numbers last season dwindled because of the team’s performances on the field, but with the way the new squad has come out firing this year, expect to see the stands starting to fill up with passionate supporters once again.
