It’s fair to say that most of the hay is in the barn for the Tennessee Volunteers’ 2018 recruiting class.
Tennessee has an SEC-high 23 commitments for 2018, but there is a bit of do for coach Butch Jones to finish off what on paper appears to be a top-10 class taking shape.
Here is a list of five Tennessee recruiting targets to keep an eye on as we enter the 2017 season.
ATH DaShon Bussell
The buzz: Bussell (6-feet-2, 182 pounds) is from Knoxville (Tenn.) Knoxville Catholic, where he is teammates with five-star Vols commitment Cade Mays. Bussell is a three-star recruit who plays wide receiver and defensive back for Knoxville Catholic. UT is his best offer, and this may come down to a situation of whether the Vols have room for Bussell.
OT Jerome Carvin
The buzz: Carvin (6-4, 325 pounds) is from Cordova (Tenn.) High, in the Memphis suburbs. Carvin is a three-star recruit who is among the top 30 offensive tackles nationally and is one of the top-10 prospects in Tennessee; the Vols already have six of the state’s top-10 on their commitment lost. It was believed that Carvin would be committing in mid-August, but that was not the case. He says he wants to take all five recruiting visits, and four appear set: Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Tennessee. The Vols are seen as the favorite.
LB Richard Jibunor
The buzz: Jibunor (6-3, 206 pounds) is from Athens (Ga.) Athens Christian. A four-star athlete, Jibunor is among the top 15 athletes nationally and a top-300 overall talent in the class of 2018. Jibunor released a list of his top nine schools on July 26, and Tennessee made the cut. Other SEC programs on the list included Alabama, Auburn, Florida and South Carolina. Getting Jibunor to Knoxville seems unlikely.
LB Caleb Johnson
The buzz: Johnson (6-3, 250 pounds) is from Columbus (Ga.) Northside. A three-star recruit, Johnson is among the top 35 inside linebacker prospects in the country. He has received offers from many SEC programs, including Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and LSU. Georgia and Tennessee could be considered the leaders for Johnson, who has excellent size for his position.
WR James Mitchell
The buzz: Mitchell (6-4, 218 pounds) is from Big Stone Gap (Va.) Union. A three-star prospect, he is among the top 10 overall recruits in Virginia and is a top-350 player nationally. The Volunteers made Mitchell’s final five list released on July 20. Joining Tennessee on the list were Duke, Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia Tech, which is considered the favorite.
