Just when it seemed as if Tennessee’s coaching search couldn’t get any wilder, athletic director John Currie was fired Friday after about eight months on the job.

Numerous reports, including one from ESPN, say Currie was dismissed after meeting with new chancellor Beverly Davenport on Friday morning.

Currie reportedly met with Washington State coach Mike Leach on Thursday night and talks were said to have gone well. But ESPN reported that university officials instructed Currie not to sign a deal with Leach. Leach looks to be at least the seventh coach who has had more-than-cursory talks with UT, and a toxic search just became more toxic.

The big question: Who does the hiring now?

Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman says former UT coach Phil Fulmer, who was bypassed when Tennessee hired Currie, may have had a hand in the proceedings.

Longtime college football writer Brett McMurphy apparently has heard the same things as Feldman.
