Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster is one of the highest-rated defensive prospects in the 2017 NFL draft and is seen as an almost-certain first-round pick. Foster has been called the “most complete linebacker” in college football by Pro Football Focus.
But where does he stack up among Nick Saban’s former linebackers? Former college football and NFL scout Chris Landry says Foster could be the best of them all.
“Foster may be the best linebacker prospect that Nick Saban has had at Alabama. Foster has the elite athleticism that I saw from Patrick (Willis) coming out of Ole Miss,” Landry said. “He possesses great pursuit speed and change of direction, allowing him to play with great range in pursuit and cover running backs and tight ends as well as slot receivers. He also shows good strength to take on the run.”
Foster had recent surgery on his right rotator cuff, and while he will be at next week’s NFL Scounting Combine, he will not go through the testing portion of the event.
Saban has produced three of the 19 linebackers selected in the first round of the NFL draft since 2010: Rolando McClain (No. 8 overall in 2010), Dont’a Hightower (No. 25 overall in 2012) and C.J. Mosley (No. 17 overall in 2014). Last year, Alabama linebacker Reggie Ragland was selected 41st overall, in the second round.
