Here are the latest SEC Power Rankings heading into championship weekend.
14. Tennessee (4-8)
Last week: 13th
The skinny: My goodness. Dante had his nine circles of hell and Vols fans went through them all this season. The Vols suffered the first eight-loss season in school history and finished winless in the SEC for the first time. And the coaching search has been – there is no nice way to say it – a debacle, starting with the delusion that Vols fans had about Jon Gruden all the way up to the Greg Schiano fiasco.
13. Vanderbilt (5-7)
Last week: 14th
The skinny: Vandy won one SEC game. But at least it was against Tennessee. Commodores fans now can crow that Vandy has won four of the past six against the Vols.
12. Florida (4-7)
Last week: 12th
The skinny: After eight seasons of embarrassing offensive football, culminating in Saturday’s 16-point loss to a bad Florida State team it outgained by 64 yards (how do you give up just 216 yards – but also 38 points?), Florida has hope thanks to the hiring of Dan Mullen. The quicker fans (and players) put the 2017 season behind them, the better.
11. Arkansas (4-8)
Last week: 11th
The skinny: Bye-bye, Bret Bielema. Bielema went 11-29 in the SEC in his five seasons. Who gets to try to pick up the pieces? The defense needs a massive talent infusion: Arkansas allowed at least 33 points in seven of eight SEC games this season and at least 40 five times. Over the past two seasons, it is 12 SEC games surrendering at least 33 and nine games giving up at least 40.
10. Kentucky (7-5)
Last week: 10th
The skinny: UK still hasn’t won eight games in a season since 2007. Ultimately, this season must go down as a disappointment for the Wildcats. SEC East foes Florida and Tennessee are at historic lows, yet the Wildcats went 1-1 against them, got mauled by Georgia and lost both division crossover games to the Mississippi schools. They also lost their cool in the loss to Louisville to close the regular season.
9. Ole Miss (6-6)
Last week: 9th
The skinny: A win in the Egg Bowl put some salve on what has been a long and depressing year for the Rebels. And interim coach Matt Luke’s performance in guiding the Rebels through a trying season was enough to get him the permanent job.
8. Missouri (7-5)
Last week: 10th
The skinny: Mizzou has won six in a row going into its bowl game. Granted, the Tigers have beaten up on flotsam and jetsam, but, hey, six wins in a row is six wins in a row.
