Winning on the road in the SEC is as difficult as you’d expect

Texas A&M’s trip to Gainesville on Saturday is noteworthy for two reasons. First, it’s the Aggies’ first-ever visit to Gainesville. Second, A&M becomes the final SEC team this season to play a true road game in league play.

The Aggies have reason for optimism: Since they’ve joined the SEC, only Alabama, Georgia and Florida have posted better records in the conference when playing in hostile territory.

Since the SEC expanded to 14 teams in 2012, only six teams have gone 4-0 on the road in conference play. Five of those reached the SEC championship game in Atlanta (Alabama in 2012, ’15 and ’16 and Missouri in 2013 and ’14). The other was Texas A&M in 2012.

Florida went unbeaten in true road games in 2012, but played only three (the Florida-Georgia game in Jacksonville, took the place of one road game on the schedule, and the Bulldogs won).

SEC teams in general struggle to avoid defeat when away from their home crowds; only five league teams have winning records in conference road games since 2012. Here’s how each team stacks up since SEC expansion in 2012. Note that for purposes of this list, the Florida-Georgia game in Jacksonville and the Arkansas-Texas A&M game in Dallas are regarded as neutral-site contests, even when one participant is designated as the home school.
