Every SEC team has Maxwell Award nominee – except the Vols

Every team in the SEC has some reason to celebrate the Maxwell Award watch list – unless you’re in Knoxville, as the Vols were shut out.

SEC schools, led by Alabama with four, had 21 players named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, announced Monday on NCAA.com.

The one team left out was Tennessee, which needs to replace several key players, including quarterback Josh Dobbs.

Even more galling for Vols fans: Former Tennessee quarterback Riley Ferguson, now at Memphis, did make the list. Former Florida quarterback Will Grier, now at West Virginia, also appears on the watch list.

Eight SEC starting quarterbacks earned places on the list, including two – Jarrett Stidham at Auburn and Malik Zaire at Florida – who have not yet taken a competitive snap for their schools.

Alabama led all SEC schools with four nominees: quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Bo Scarbrough, wide receiver Calvin Ridley and cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Auburn (Kamryn Pettway and Stidham), Georgia (Nick Chubb and Jacob Eason), LSU (Derrius Guice and Arden Key), South Carolina (Jake Bentley and Deebo Samuel) and Texas A&M (Christian Kirk and Trayveon Williams) also had multiple players nominated.

The Maxwell Award, first presented in 1937, is awarded to the nation’s top college player as selected by the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia. Louisville’s Lamar Jackson is the defending winner.
