Three years after a loss to South Carolina led to his dismissal as Florida’s coach the next morning, Will Muschamp was able to experience the more enjoyable side of that outcome.
The Gamecocks won their seventh game of the year Saturday, beating the Gators 28-20 and clinching a winning record. They also finish SEC play at 5-3, their first winning record in the conference in four seasons.
While beating the school that fired him and already has moved on from the coach who replaced him had to be satisfying for Muschamp, he wasn’t looking to rub it in publicly.
“Give Florida credit – those kids have been through an awful lot,” Muschamp said after the game. “It’s a very difficult thing to go through, what those young men are facing and I hate it for those guys. … I know those guys. They represented Florida extremely well today.”
Reporters attempted to elicit more on what it meant to beat the Gators from Muschamp, but all he would add was, “We enjoyed it.”
Right now, there’s no question which program’s immediate future looks brighter.
“We’re not happy with where we are,” Muschamp said. “We have a lot more out there for us moving forward, but I’m proud of the progress we’ve been able to make.”
Here are five takeaways from the game.
