Tennessee coach Butch Jones has had an interesting relationship with the media during his tenure in Knoxville. The coach has done his best to reveal little information about his program, while providing quotes that have left reporters and fans scratching their heads.

Earlier this week, Tennessee signed the No. 17 overall national recruiting class for 2017. While many viewed the class as a disappointment, Jones was far more optimistic.

“Everyone gets into the whole two-star, three-star, four-star, five-star thing,” Jones said.  “The only five-star that we even concern ourselves with is a five-star heart.  We want five-star hearts and five-star competitors.”

As ridiculous as that quote seems for a coach to say, it’s nothing new for Jones. Tennessee fans know all too well that its protocol for the fourth-year head coach.

Here’s a look at some of Jones’ most ridiculous statements from his tenure in Knoxville.

10. “Brick by brick”

Ugh.

“Brick by brick.”

It’s a phrase that has been drilled into Vols fans’ heads for the past four years. Jones used this as a way to build long-term expectations for a downtrodden program.

With Tennessee stuck in rebuilding mode, the coach promised to build the program “brick by brick” with recruiting as its foundation. While that worked during his first two seasons in Knoxville, it’s a promise that has grown thin with a large portion of the fan base. Eventually, Jones is going to have to take those bricks, apply some mortar and actually build a house.
