Auburn wanted Thomas Johnston. So did Arkansas. But the three-star linebacker had other ideas.
Johnston announced Tuesday that he is committing to UAB, a surprise decision for a player coveted by several major programs.
A top-25 national outside linebacker prospect from Spanish Fort (Ala.) High, Johnston had been linked with both SEC West schools. Earlier in the recruiting process, LSU, Ole Miss and Mississippi State also were in the chase.
But a late effort from UAB, which is re-starting its program this fall after suspending football for two years, landed Johnston, who is from the Mobile area.
Johnston was among the top uncommitted defensive players still on the radar of SEC schools. Now that he’s no longer available, Auburn and Arkansas will have to direct their efforts elsewhere.
